As Ungers described in Berlin: A Green Archipelago, post-war Berlin consisted of 60 isolated urban “islands” floating within an ocean of open space, surrounded by the Berlin Wall. The empty spaces between these islands were then to be filled in by forest over time, thereby turning West Berlin into an archipelago of dense urban islands floating within a sea of greenery.

Untamed Gardens is an adaptable system for the intensification of the sea of greenery within the Berlin city.
